Legal Aid, TIN Rights
Legal Aid for trans*, intersex and non-binary people e. V., or TIN Legal Aid e. V. for short, has existed informally since 2020 and as a registered non-profit since 2024. We provide legal and psychosocial support to trans*, intersex and non-binary (TIN) people whose rights have been violated. Through our media work, strategic litigation, and individual counsel for impacted TIN people, we aim to illuminate, criticize, and ultimately change social structures of TIN oppression in Germany and the EU. Our work focuses on the strategic support of lawsuits that illuminate legal gaps and systemic discrimination against TIN persons. The aim is to obtain landmark court rulings that enable long-term structural changes in German law and ultimately the EU. We have built up a nationwide network of TIN-solidaric lawyers, publicized discriminatory practices, and provided expert commentary on draft legislation. We have won numerous court cases for TIN people and thus achieved court rulings on the rights of TIN people that were previously doubted. Additionally, we offer informational and psychosocial counselling to impacted TIN individuals as able, and otherwise refer to funded counselling centres and TIN-solidaric lawyers whenever possible. The primary beneficiaries of our work are TIN individuals living in Germany, from Germany or looking to migrate to Germany, who face discrimination, legal insecurity, and systemic barriers to justice. In particular, those experiencing marginalization due to class, migration status, disability, or racialization will benefit from more responsive, accessible, and sustained support structures. TIN Legal Aid is TIN-founded and led. We have proven to be an indispensable point of contact and an essential pillar of the broader queer community in Germany. The long-term safeguarding and sustainability of our work is not only a core necessity in the fight for TIN rights, but an important symbol that TIN people are worthy of protection.
A few words to convince you?
We believe that storytelling and public dialogue are essential tools for defending democracy and human rights. At a time when trans*, intersex and non-binary people are increasingly targeted and excluded, sharing our own narratives is a political act of resistance that counters silencing, misinformation and hate. Podcasthon offers a valuable platform to amplify our perspectives, connect legal struggles with lived realities, and build solidarity across movements.
