This was my godfather, Cleveland Amory, and Friendly (photo). 
Friendly was one of the thousands of burros Cleveland airlifted from the Grand Canyon before the government slaughtered them. My godfather was an important animal activist, who started the Fund for Animals in the 1960s after he was fired from The Today Show for speaking out against vivisection.

I adored Cleveland! He and my godmother Martha inspired me to be an advocate for animals.

The Fund for Animals is now part of the Humane World for Animals.
(HWA was formerly the Humane Society of the United States.) 

I am excited to host an EverWalkathon on March 22 in Western North Carolina to raise funds for the HWA Emergency Animal Relief Fund to help animals after disasters -- like Hurricane Helene here in WNC.

Every year, millions of children die from preventable causes such as pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria and undernutrition. Hunger is still causing nearly half of deaths in children under 5 years old. From this data, we estimate at least 6,200 children die each day from causes related to undernutrition. This is heartbreaking.

Established at the turn of the Millennium, Moor Trees is a Devon-based charity dedicated to recreating native woodland across Dartmoor and surrounding areas. Although our region seems to be well wooded, much of the forest is commercial softwoods, Victorian game plantations (often made up of trees from elsewhere in Europe, such as sweet chestnut) and shelter belts. True natural woodland, carpeted by bluebells or daffodils in Spring, rich with native birds and butterflies, is rare, mostly found in the steep valley fringes of Dartmoor.

We aim to restore native broadleaf woodland by growing trees from locally collected seed in our community tree nurseries, and planting them as new woodland on private and public land.

Moor Trees is dedicated to working with landowners and the local community to restore native woodland on Dartmoor and surrounding areas. We advise on the design of woodland creation and habitat restoration and can support with grant applications. We offer the full supervision of tree planting days over winter from early November until around Easter each year. 

We use the local provenance trees that we grow at our two community tree nurseries in our woodland creation schemes. Each autumn with the support of the local community we gather thousands of seeds with the aim of germinating and growing 40,000 new seedlings annually. We currently have more than 100,000 growing in our nurseries getting ready for a future in the woodlands of tomorrow.

Moor Trees is reliant on our partners, funders and supporters for the work that we do. This includes the dedication and commitment of our team of volunteers joining in with our year-round, weekly volunteering opportunities. We have links with local education providers including the University of Plymouth and Cornwall College Group. Through our annual woodland monitoring programme we participate in citizen science as well as ad hoc research projects.

We are regenerating vital woodlands on Dartmoor, including Wiseman’s Wood. With your support we can grow local trees and restore habitats.

Gift of Adoption provides grants to complete the adoptions of children in vulnerable circumstances––giving them permanent families and the chance to thrive. 

Because they were blessed with the resources to afford the financial burden of three adoptions, Lucy and Gene decided to pay it forward. So in 1996, with the sole purpose of helping children get adopted, the Wyka’s establish a private family giving foundation: The Gift of Adoption Fund.

“We couldn’t help but notice how so many other hopeful parents were not as fortunate as us financially,” noted Lucy and Gene.

“Yet it quickly became obvious that under the existing private fund structure, we would only be able to scratch the surface in terms of providing financial assistance to those longing to adopt,” added Lucy.

To strengthen their vision, Lucy and Gene changed the legal status of the fund from a private to a public charity. This allowed affiliate organizations – chapters – to then be formed. Functioning as fundraising partners, these chapters share the Gift of Adoption Fund’s non-profit 501(c) 3 status while rallying local efforts across the country.
